Bamburgh Castle

Standing high on a basalt outcrop, overlooking the North Sea, Bamburgh Castle is one of the most impressive looking castles in England. It is visible for many miles, and from its battlements offers views of Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, the Farne Islands and the Cheviot Hills.
The site of the castle has a history of occupation dating back to the 1st century BC. One of the oldest buildings remaining is a large Norman Keep, probably built by Henry II. In 1464, during the Wars of the Roses, Bamburgh became the first castle to succumb to cannon fire, suffering heavy damage. The ruins of the castle were restored and extended in the 18th and 19th centuries leaving little of the earlier fortifications.
The castle also contains the Armstrong Museum of Victorian Industrial Archaeology

Rhossili Bay, Gower, South Wales

Rhossili Bay is the most westerly bay on the Gower peninsula and bears the full might of the Atlantic swells. It is the most consistent surfing beach on Gower, with the biggest waves at the north end at Llangennith. It is a dramatic environment with Rhossili Downs towering above the vast expanse of beach that stretches three miles. Heading west along the cliff path towards the end of the peninsula there is Worm's Head, a mile long serpent-like promontory jutting out into the ocean. Access to the beach; a good path leads down the side of the cliffs, but its a steep climb back up to the car park. For spectacular panoramic views over the bay why not walk up Rhossili Downs, the climb and views will take your breath away, but well worth it!

What Wales Explorer Users Are Saying:

"Love it ! A fabulous well thought out guide to God's country!"

“Great app looking forward to my trip to Wales - thanks”

“I love the layout of the map. Can the town names be just a little larger? Being able to pause the slide show and get info on that subject is great. Keep adding more pictures."

“What a great travel experience without leaving my chair 5300+ km away (thanks to the location service). A handy guide, cleanly written with key info at your fingertips. Gluck's tight, approachable, and often clever style and editorial choices make this both entertaining and informative. His affection for Wales comes through and compels you to make a visit or at least dream of one. Ran nicely on my iPhone 4. His photo choices were even more exciting on my iPad.”

"A well thought out and beautifully designed app. worth purchasing whether you visit Wales or not.”

"This app is the perfect companion to anyone who wants to explore Wales (visitors and natives alike!) - it's fun to use and full of good ideas, I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more or wondering how to make the most of this beautiful place. If you're considering visiting this app gives you a good idea of what Wales has to offer too! I've tried some of the other Wales guide-type apps and this is by far the best. Great stuff ."
